Taxi at Mobile World Congress: how to move without losing your morning

During MWC, Fira Gran Via takes in and releases tens of thousands of people in the same narrow windows. Here is how taxis actually work those days: where they stop, which supplements are legitimate, and the point at which booking ahead stops being a luxury.

Why MWC breaks taxis in Barcelona

Mobile World Congress runs at Fira Gran Via in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and moves something like a hundred thousand visitors over four days. The total is not the problem. The problem is that nearly all of them want to arrive between 08:00 and 09:30, and to leave in the hour after the keynotes finish.

In those two windows the venue rank and the apps run out of cars at the same moment. That is not bad luck or bad planning: demand in one specific hour simply exceeds every free taxi in the metropolitan area at once.

What it means if you have a meeting: a trip that takes twenty minutes on an ordinary Tuesday becomes forty minutes of waiting plus twenty of driving. And if you fly out that evening, that difference is your flight.

Getting to Fira Gran Via

From the airport it is about 8 km and usually 15 minutes — Fira Gran Via is closer to the terminals than almost anywhere in Barcelona, Sants included. From the Eixample it is about 9 km and 20 to 30 minutes depending on the hour.

The venue has several entrances and they are not interchangeable. Tell me which gate you need — 1, 2 and 4 are the usual ones for the big congresses — and that is where you are dropped, rather than wherever the car can first pull in.

If you are carrying kit — stand parts, sample cases, screens — say so when you book and a vehicle with a real boot comes instead of a saloon.

Leaving when the halls close

This is the hard hour, and the only thing that genuinely works is having the car ordered beforehand. A booking for a set time means the taxi is already on its way while you are still inside, rather than starting to look for one at the same moment as two thousand other people.

If the meeting overruns, one message moves the time. Moving a booking is far easier than creating one from nothing at six in the evening on a congress Tuesday.

Which supplements are legitimate that week

A trip that starts at Fira Gran Via carries a venue supplement set by the metropolitan authority. It is official, it appears on the meter, and it is already inside the fixed price you see when booking here.

What does not exist is a "congress" surcharge, a "demand" surcharge or a rain surcharge. Barcelona taxi tariffs are public and do not rise because a lot of people want a car. That is the difference from ride-hailing apps, whose prices multiply in exactly the hours a car is hardest to find.

When to book

For the airport transfers in and out, a week ahead is plenty. For hotel-to-venue runs in the congress rush hours, the earlier the better: the supply of free cars those days is the same as always while demand is ten times higher.

Booking is not only about securing a car. It is knowing the price beforehand, which in a week when everything else in the city is priced upward is half the peace of mind.

Questions and answers

How much is a taxi from the airport to Fira Gran Via?

It is around 8 km and priced on the real distance, which makes it one of the cheapest airport transfers in the area. Type the trip into the form and the fixed figure appears before you book.

Can you pick up at the venue when the congress closes?

Yes, and that is exactly when having it booked pays off. Tell me the gate and the time and the car is there; if your meeting overruns, one message moves it.

Do prices rise during MWC?

No. Taxi tariffs are public and do not move with demand. A trip starting at the Fira carries the official venue supplement, which is already inside the price you see.

Are there 6 or 8-seaters for teams?

Yes. Choose the passenger count in the form and the van price appears straight away. For teams travelling with equipment, book it ahead.
