How to get a taxi in Barcelona
Four ways to get a taxi in Barcelona, and they are not equally good at every hour. Where the ranks are, how to flag one down, how to spot a licensed cab, and when it is worth booking a price in advance instead.
Book it and know the price before you travel
The simplest way, and the only one where you know the number in advance: send a message with your pick-up, your destination and the time, and you get a written confirmation with a fixed price. The price is worked out from the real driving distance of your trip, not a zone or a guess. Tolls, luggage, terminal charges and the waiting are inside it. It does not move afterwards, whatever the traffic does.

The ranks
There are around 300 taxi ranks across Barcelona. The ones that reliably have cars are Sants station, Plaça de Catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia, the Barceloneta seafront, and both airport terminals.
At the airport the rank is directly outside arrivals at both T1 and T2, and it is well signed. The queue moves quickly most of the day. It moves slowly when several long-haul flights land together, which is usually mid-morning and again in the early evening.
At Sants the rank is on the Carrer de Viriat side, below street level. Three high-speed trains arriving at once will empty it, so if you are on a tight connection it is worth having something arranged.
Flagging one down in the street
Look at the roof light and the windscreen. A green roof light and a green sign means the taxi is free and will stop. Red means occupied. If the light is off, the driver is off duty and will not stop however hard you wave.
Barcelona taxis are black and yellow, every one of them carries a licence number on the door, and every one has a meter on the dashboard. There is no informal taxi trade here — which is not true of every city, and it is one thing you genuinely do not have to worry about in Barcelona.
Drivers are required to accept card payment. If a meter is not running or a card machine is suddenly "broken", you are within your rights to insist on both.
The apps
Free Now is the main app for hailing a licensed Barcelona taxi from your phone. You watch the car approach and pay through the app, which is the part most visitors want.
They share one weakness with the ranks: at exactly the hours you most need a car — a five in the morning departure, a cruise disembarkation, the end of a congress at the Fira — everybody opens the app at the same moment and there is nothing free to send.
When to book ahead, and when not to bother
For a short hop across the centre at two in the afternoon, do not book anything. Walk to a rank or raise your arm. You will have a car in three minutes and you will pay the meter.
Booking earns its place in four situations: an early flight, an arrival with luggage, a group too large for a saloon, and a cruise morning when three thousand people leave one ship inside two hours.
In all four the problem is not finding a taxi eventually. It is finding one at the exact moment you need it, with room for your bags, and knowing what it costs before you are sitting in it.
Why a message works better than a call
I am one licensed driver, not a switchboard. If you ring while I am carrying a passenger the phone goes unanswered, and that is the honest reason a message beats a call.
Send a WhatsApp and you get a written confirmation, usually within minutes, with the price, the vehicle and exactly where I will be standing. If it is urgent, say so — I answer as soon as I can safely stop.
